Karandash

Karandash is an independent type foundry founded by Vassil Kateliev, a type designer, graphic designer, and software developer based in Varna, Bulgaria. With a focus on high-quality, functional typography, Karandash is home to notable type families such as Basil, which received an award in the Cyrillic Category at GRANSHAN 2014, and Bolyar, co-authored for FontMaker and widely used in package and spirit labeling.Beyond type design, Karandash is also dedicated to font engineering and workflow automation. Vassil has collaborated on major projects such as Science Gothic and Material Icons for Google, while also developing innovative tools for the industry—most notably the TypeRig font development kit. With a commitment to both craftsmanship and technological innovation, Karandash continues to refine and expand its library of typefaces.
