They have a personality that must either be contended with or taken advantage of.

If you’re reading this, it’s a pretty safe bet that you know what a serif typeface is. And that, more than likely, also goes for sans serif, square serif and script typefaces.

But what about glyphic fonts? They can be powerful design tools – and worth getting to know. How about an introduction?

Glyphic fonts draw inspiration from ancient inscriptions carved in stone. They feature distinctive characteristics such as sharp, incised serifs, minimal contrast in stroke weight, and axis of curved strokes that tends to be vertical. A distinguishing feature of many of these designs are triangular-shaped serifs, or a flaring of the character strokes where they terminate.

Glyphic typefaces are distinctive designs that don’t fade into the background. They make a statement. They standout. They have a personality that must either be contended with – or taken advantage of.

Because of their strong personalities, glyphic fonts do not generally pair well with other glyphic fonts. They do, however, pair well with just about any sans serif design and a wide variety of serif typefaces.

Albertus®, Agora®, Élan™, Friz Quadrata™ and Masqualero™ are quintessential glyphic typefaces.

But glyphic fonts can also have Art Nouveau overtones like ITC Benguiat® or be almost a sans serif, like Delta®.

Glyphic typeface designs offer a unique blend of historical charm and contemporary utility. Whether used sparingly or as a central element of design, these fonts have the power to elevate projects with their timeless appeal and striking visual presence.
