About Akhand Thai Font Family

Akhand Thai is part of a large system of monolinear sans-serif style fonts created by the Indian Type Foundry. Various subfamilies from our Akhand multi-script superfamily support India’s scripts – and the writing systems used in several other countries. While the shapes used in each Akhand subfamily are script-specific, they all share a similar dynamic. Typically rounded elements have been made compact; their verticals are flattened. This ‘straightening out’ gives text set in the typefaces a streamlined look. Like in the other subfamilies, the letterforms in Akhand Thai are condensed. In each script, Akhand is fine-tooled for use in corporate identity design, editorial design, and even signage systems. Although we primarily developed the fonts for headline settings, the Light, Regular, and Semibold styles are suitable for use in short paragraphs of running text. The lighter and heavier styles are an optimal choice for headlines, or single-word settings, like logos. The broad range of weights makes combinations with a high degree of contrast possible. Mix the lightest and the heaviest styles to create a powerful effect in your design. Akhand Thai is available in two formats: install it as a single Variable Font or use the family’s eight static OpenType font files. Those range in weight from Extralight to Black. While the static-format fonts offer a good intermediary-step selection, users who install the Variable Font have vastly greater control over their text’s stroke width. The Akhand Thai Variable Font’s weight axis allows users to differentiate between almost 1,000 possible font weights. That enables you to fine-tune your text’s exact appearance on-screen or in print. The base character height in the Akhand Thai fonts is “big on the body.” Across a line of text, the consonantal forms take up the majority of vertical space. Vowel marks above and below have been shortened – keeping these to a minimum allows for lines of text to be set more closely together vertically. The reduction of interlinear space is paramount for successful headline typesetting, and Akhand Thai performs much better in display applications than similar fonts with more elongated vowel marks. Because of their reduced height, the typeface’s vowel mark forms have been simplified somewhat out of necessity. But the stylistic reduction is in keeping with the modular feeling of the typeface’s overall design.
