Alex Marshall has lived in Santa Barbara for over twenty years. Born in Scotland, he first studied architecture, and began working in that field upon graduation from college. He later studied printing and graphic design in London and established his own firm, Marshall Arts. In the late 1960s right up through 1980, he was heavily involved in graphic design for the music industry. Many of the top record labels and recording artists of that time were his clients, and the list is impressive: A&M Records, Capitol Records, Virgin Records, Decca Records, UA Records, MCA Records, McCartney Prooductions, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Chieftains, Aerosmith, Lou Reed, Doobie Bros, and for good measure, add Monty Python Productions. In 1980, he moved his business to Santa Barbara, where he has been ever since. All the while, Alex, the musician, has played guitar and banjo with numerous classic jazz bands throughout Europe and California. Currently he is co-leader of Ulysses Jasz, who have a weekly gig at the James Joyce Irish Pub in Santa Barbara. Alex has drawn many letters throughout his design career. Ingram is his first full typeface. He has several more in various stages of completion.
