About the family

Banished is a rugged Western-inspired slab serif that captures the rough texture of nineteenth-century frontier printing and vintage wanted posters. Inspired in part by cult cinema poster typography, the design blends Old West lettering traditions with distressed character detail to create a typeface full of grit and attitude. The font includes contextual alternates that automatically switch between capital and alternate glyphs to create subtle randomness across headlines and large text. Alternate numerals are also included, allowing numbers to shift between forms for a more organic, hand-printed appearance. Banished contains hundreds of glyphs including uppercase, alternate capitals placed in lowercase positions, numerals, alternate numerals, punctuation, and an extensive multilingual Latin character set. OpenType features enable automatic alternation when supported, while alternate characters remain accessible through glyph panels in most design software. With its narrow slab forms and distressed texture, Banished works beautifully for Western posters, vintage packaging, whiskey labels, frontier-style branding, horror western graphics, retro cinema titles, and rustic editorial design.

About Grype

Grype began as a grunge type outfit for a short-lived time under the independent designer Charles Leroux. It was acquired by Astigmatic (AOETI) in 2016 and has since transitioned under the team of Brian J. Bonislawsky and Jim Lyles into a type foundry that produces font families inspired by corporate, band, and other logotypes and branding. And we still have retained some of the early pepperings of grunge typography from the library to boot.Grype expands on branding logotypes and makes them into full fledged type identity kits.
