About Coyote Blackletter Font Family

#CoyoteBlackletter is a Blackletter typeface designed by #CarlosFabianCG at #AndinistasFonts between 2016 and 2024. This impressive typographic diamond boasts 700 glyphs and multiple variants in a single OpenType file. Its concept was developed by studying classic film logos and Heavy Metal and Thrash Metal logos, along with the lead type Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch, created by R. Koch between 1919 and 1926. Subsequently, various letterings with flourishes were designed by hand, inspired by old German posters, producing ideas with medieval influences from calligraphers like #RudolfKoch, #WardDunham, and #HermannZapf.

Long story:

My fascination with medieval films sparked my curiosity about the fonts used by bands such as Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Testament, and Night Demon. These logos not only inspired me but also expanded my experimental typographic freedom by evoking images of Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, and demonic and vampiric concepts, providing me with abundant typographic material. The aesthetics of these bands' covers not only pay homage to medieval mysticism but also represent an ideal starting point for designing the expressiveness of Coyote Blackletter. For instance, the edge of a medieval dagger can resemble the end of Coyote Blackletter's strokes, as its essence is based on a Gothic typeface created with a square-tipped calligraphic tool, and its voids and fills follow visual logic consistent with imaginaries linked to medieval darkness.

This combination offered me various options and allowed me to discover ancient references, characterized by voids and fills typical of Gothic fonts. Coyote Blackletter was designed with majestic uppercase and lowercase letters with long or short strokes, ascenders and descenders, fused with typefaces I discovered in German publications from 1935 and 1945. Accordingly, I conducted analyses and took notes on paper using a pencil, ink, and flat-tipped tools, focusing on making calligraphic copies first, and then refining them. All these efforts were transferred to Bézier glyphs in a process of repetition and correction. Today, these stages are reflected in ordered and systematic sketches, as if they had a planned origin to achieve a precise result. Between hand drawing, Bézier work, and OpenType programming, multiple calligraphic and lettering syntheses resulted.

Bonus Track: Coyote Black Letter includes 15 unique pictograms:

  • Gargoyle silhouette: Represents the grotesque, the monstrous, and the guardian. In this context, it could symbolize dark or mysterious forces.

  • Arrow-shaped lightning bolt: Suggests speed, power, and direction. It could represent a sudden enlightenment, a revelation, or a stroke of luck.

  • Double lightning bolt inside a container: A double lightning bolt can symbolize duality or conflict. The container could represent the mind or soul.

  • Wolf with a snake's tongue inside a star: The wolf is a symbol of loyalty, intelligence, and ferocity. The snake represents wisdom and temptation. The star could symbolize divinity or destiny.

  • Eagle with geometric wings: The eagle is a symbol of power, freedom, and vision. The geometric wings could indicate a rational or intellectual approach.

  • Eagle with curved wings: Similar to the previous one, but the curved wings could suggest a more emotional or spiritual nature.

  • Aggressive eagle with open wings: RepresentBlackletters Classic Font Tattoo Font Calligraphy Font Modern Blackletter Classic Blackletter Fraktur Lettering Gothic Font Blackmetal Metal Typeface Font Rochart Tattoo Lettering Destroyers Destroyeds a powerful and dominant force. It could symbolize a struggle or a challenge.

  • Calligraphic cross in the style of Rudolf Koch: The cross is a universal symbol of faith and sacrifice. Rudolf Koch's calligraphic style gives it an artistic and sophisticated touch.

  • Iron fist: Symbolizes strength, power, and determination.

  • Lettering of the word "Illusion", corrected by my teacher #SantiagoPol: The word "illusion" suggests something deceptive or fanciful. The correction by the teacher implies a search for truth or reality.

  • Calligraphic lettering designed by Rudolf Koch: Similar to the pictogram of the cross, but focused on the written word.

  • Medieval borders for the left, right, top, and bottom margins: Medieval borders are decorative embellishments that frame an image or text. In this case, they delimit the space of the pictograms and give them an antique appearance.

About Andinistas

The word "Andinistas" roughly translates to "people devoted to the Andes." In Venezuela, it is the word used to describe the people who climb the slopes of Pico Bolívar, the country's highest mountain. Carlos Fabián Camargo Guerrero, the founder of Andinistas Fonts, found this name to be interesting because of its resonance and relationship with the unknown.Carlos is one of the first designers from Colombia or Venezuela to be able to make it as a full-time type designer. His experience of living in both countries has allowed him to tap into their colorful visual cultures and bring aspects of each of them into his designs. He is proud of both countries, as they have been an inexhaustible source of ideas to him.Carlos joined MyFonts in 2006. Since then, his designs have evolved from a streetwise, sassy grunge style to a series of energetic and personable scripts and display fonts. He says that in typeface design, we can never say we have learned enough. When we look at old classics, we realize that what we need to learn is inexhaustible. We never get anything definitively.Today, Carlos feels that the word "Andinistas" also has a valuable meaning for him personally. It has taken many years of experience before he slowly received some recognition for his foundry. This has required profound conviction and the will to surpass oneself. So the word combines concepts like spectacular beauty and adventure with the idea of overcoming challenges and getting to the top with work and creative effort.
