About Deccan Telugu Font Family

Deccan Telugu is the Indian Type Foundry’s first retail release for the Telugu script. This family – designed by Ramakrishna Saiteja – offers five fonts ranging in weight from Light through Bold; each contains 719 glyphs, including the many conjuncts and ligatures necessary for proper Telugu shaping. Deccan Telugu is a text design. Like the traditional typefaces that have been used in the design of text-heavy Telugu documents for decades, Deccan Telugu’s forms feature a strong vertical contrast. The sides of the characters tend to be drawn with rather thin hairlines, while the curves on the bottom portions of the base characters are gracefully curved and feature heavy swelling. While this amount of contrast is to be expected in the Bold weight, Saiteja has brought it in every style excellently, including the Light.

Its retail library offers fonts for text and display use, in visual styles ranging from traditional to experimental. ITF currently offers over 200 retail font families across 20 writing systems. ITF’s Kohinoor font family is on permanent display at London’s Design Museum as part of the “Designer Maker User” exhibition, which recognises this work as a historic milestone in the field of graphic design.
