Hans Kühne studied at the art school at Braunschweig (1929) and at the Technical Institute at Offenbach under Rudolf Koch and Ernst Engel, where later he was an instructor (1934). From 1945 he worked as a free-lance graphic artist; in 1958 he was appointed instructor of scribal arts and typography at the Meisterschule für Maler and the school of Commercial Arts of Hamburg. He was the author of the black-letter types Kühne-Gotisch (1938), Kühne-Schrift (Klingspor 1954), Logos (1955), the exquisite Andreas Schrift (Trennert 1948; Klingspor 1954), bold forms and a romanised version of Rudolf Koch's Offenbach, the latter called Stahl (Klingspor 1937-9), all of which have been digitised by Gerhard Helzel of Hamburg.
