Jamal Bustan was born in the city of Qunietra, Syria, and lives now in Damascus. Mr. Bustan’s calligraphy work is exhibited in, Germany, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates since 1985, and acquired in public and private collections in several countries. He was commissioned to write the Mushaf (Quran) of Sheikh Maktoum, published in Dubai in 2003. This Quran is praised for the legibility of its calligraphy.
Mr. Bustan is well known for his innovative calligraphic compositions, often based on less-known Kufic styles, which he started to study in the early 1970’s. He received an award for his Kufic work from Tehran’s First International Calligraphy Festival in 2009.
In addition to working as the head of the lettering section at the Cartography Department in Damascus for 25 years, Jamal Bustan is also a graphic designer who produces book and magazine covers, logos, and Arabic typefaces. He taught calligraphy at the College of Arts at the Arab International University in Damascus.
