An acclaimed publication designer and brand development specialist, I have been a graphic designer and creative director since 1986. Custom type design has been a key component of my brand work for 25 years, serving as a catalyst for connection, disruption, and change. I began developing custom typefaces for magazines and corporate identity projects, and many years later, I began programming fonts.
I take tremendous pleasure in designing versatile, extensible fonts that can help designers express their best ideas. My designs range from display to text to script fonts, from outlandish to conservative, and from single weights to superfamilies, always with a focus on form and function.
My type design inspiration comes from many sources, including niche brand development, package design, and historical references. I was surely influenced by my great grandfather, a sign painter, and by my father, who hand-drew original script faces for fun. His letterforms where always spontaneous yet disciplined, and perfectly complimented the atmosphere of the room. I admired his ability to evenly fill a given space without first drawing it out. His grandfather was known for the same spacial awareness, often painting 20-40-foot banners without measuring, starting at one side and finishing at the end with evenly weighted characters of equal, proportional widths. Everything fit perfectly.
My type design approach is simple: I create purposeful, inspired fonts with the goal of inspiring designers in the same way type began inspiring me thirty years ago.
I live and work in Seattle, where I ride bicycles, write books, design type, and enjoy the rain (and sun).
