I believe a solid foundation is a necessity to good design. My methodology is to take inspiration from past design and art movements and cross-pollinating them with contemporary visuals and styles. Having spent 25 years in NYC I learned to take visual cues from everyday surroundings - both the beautiful and the ugly. Every design should have a narrative and solid backbone - something I try to subscribe to in all my designs.
