I was digging through boxes of stuff my parents had kept from my childhood and found my old penmanship assignments from first grade. I thought it would make a fun font, and I thought it would be fun to learn HOW to make a font. I scanned them in, cleaned them up, finagled some software, and managed to export a usable font: First Grade. It was a bit of a thrill to use a font that I created, so I made more. I made fonts of my kids’ handwriting, fonts inspired by skate and graffiti culture (where I developed a love of letters), and anything else that was bouncing around in my head.
