Mamoun Sakkal, PhD is a type designer from Aleppo, Syria, who lives and works in the United States. He is founder and principal of Sakkal Design in Bothell, Washington. Providing graphic design and communication solutions to major national and international corporations, his firm has focused on Arabic calligraphy and typography since the 1990s.
He has received awards in calligraphy, graphics, and type design, including three awards of excellence from the Type Directors Club of New York, one from IRCICA, Istanbul, and one from Letter Arts Review Annual. Dr. Sakkal has been the Arabic typography specialist for Microsoft since 2001, and regularly provides consultations on Arabic typography to companies and agencies around the world.
Dr. Sakkal studied art at the Plastic Arts Center in Aleppo and has degrees in architecture from the University of Aleppo and the University of Washington in Seattle, and Ph.D. in Islamic art history from the University of Washington. He has lectured on Islamic art, Arabic calligraphy and Arabic typography at universities and conferences in the United States, Canada, England, Dubai, Kuwait, Syria, and Uzbekistan.
