About Abdullah Tasci

Abdullah Taşcı was born in 1945 in the Develi district of Kayseri province. Upon completing his primary and secondary education in Kırıkkale, he began studying in the Graphic Arts Program at the State Academy of Fine Arts. After graduating in 1972, Taşcı passed the assistantship examination that same year, thus embarking on his career in academics. Upon completing his doctorate-level proficiency thesis in 1978, he began teaching courses on graphic design. He became an Assistant Professor in 1982. During his career in academics, Taşcı took on the role of calligrapher Emin Barın’s assistant, thus specializing in the art of calligraphy and typeface design, as well. He continued to work at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University until his retirement in 1999. Then, he continued his academic career as a faculty member in the faculty of fine arts at Maltepe University from 2000 to 2007 and at Doğuş University from 2007 to 2020. Taşcı received his first design award while still in university, as the first-place winner in a banner contest by the Turkish Association for Disabled People in 1970. In the following years, he received numerous awards and accolades in banner and packaging design, primarily in logo design. His works were featured in the Brno Biennial in Czechoslovakia in 1974 and 1978. Taşcı held his first solo exhibition in 1975. That same year, he was asked to redesign the owl figure on Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University’s emblem, and Taşcı’s design is still used by the University to this day. In 1986, his works were featured in a logo design exhibition in Giessen, Germany. Additionally, many art lovers have been introduced to his works through various exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad. An artist who has designed 8 different typeface families to date, Taşcı has also done the Turkish localization for nearly 1,000 fonts.
