Wico Valk is a practicing architect since 1989. Until 2009 he was a co-owner of a Rotterdam-based architects firm of 40 people.
He was fascinated by type in his early childhood. In his adolescent years however, he dreamed of being a pilot. Too young to be tested properly, he studied Aerospace Engineering for a year, where he found out that designing and drawing was his true passion. In Architecture he decided, he could completely fulfill that passion and left flying to the birds.
He likes to ‘construct’ a font. Tries to keep it simple but strong. Using as little elements as possible. Furthermore, seeing the different characters of a font as individuals, he strongly believes that there is a similarity between type-design and managing people, his other passion: trying to bring out the qualities of every individual character.
