About Baltica Font Family
The Baltica typeface features slab-serif characteristics with notably thinner serifs. Its capitals are generously wide, and it has a large x-height, ensuring good legibility even at small sizes.
These qualities make Baltica particularly useful for newspaper and magazine typography, and in general for various text sizes, while its strong character shapes are ideal for striking display lines.
Baltica was designed at the Polygraphmash type design bureau in 1951-52 by Vera Chiminova, Isay Slutsker, and others, inspired by Jakob Erbar's Candida (Ludwig & Mayer, 1936).
The digital version, featuring three weights, was created at Polygraphmash by Alexander Tarbeev in 1988. Additional styles, including Small Capitals, Bold, Extra Bold, and Extra Condensed, were developed by Manvel Shmavonyan and released by Paratype in 2008.
Baltica main characteristics:
2 widths: Regular and Extra Condensed
8 styles in total
680+ glyphs in every style
