Fonts used on FontShop
Want to know what typefaces you’re looking at? This will explain all.
One cardinal rule of design is that the typography helps define your brand identity. On FontShop.com, we’re putting a new spin on this old maxim. Instead of sticking to one fixed set of typefaces that forever represent our brand, we’re changing them periodically on the website design, making changeability itself part of the design concept. We’ll also be using different headline fonts to illustrate the nature of changing editorial content. So for example, if we post an article about stencil typefaces, the headline will be set in a stencil font. In this version, we begin with FF Sero for the main headlines, and FF Yoga Sans for all subsidiary text. But keep your eye on FontShop.com to see the typefaces change over time.

For the body text, navigation elements and subtitles, we chose FF Yoga Sans. Paradoxically, this font has distinct personality, yet manages to have a “neutral” effect, i.e. it doesn’t impose itself too much on its surroundings, but at the same, never gets boring. FF Yoga Sans can be used flexibly in any font size, remaining legible on every device. From a technical standpoint, this is an unbeatable advantage font websites like FontShop Next, which are designed specifically to scale gracefully on all screens. Any seasoned typographer knows it can be difficult to combine two different sans serif families, but FF Sero and FF Yoga Sans make for perfect companions.

To push the boundaries of web typography, we decided to use FF Sero Extra Light in 96px size as the headline font. Though it may seem counter-intuitive, we chose it specifically because it’s still uncommon to see such large, thin weights on the web. By using it on next.fontshop.com, we’re simply demonstrating that you have endless typographic possibilities. Ultimately, there are many reasons why we picked FF Sero. In addition to having a fresh and modern design, it also harmonizes elegantly with FF Yoga Sans. It catches your eye, yet never upstages the actual content of the page. Finally, it combines the striking forms of an American Grotesque with the legibility of a Humanist sans serif. With this elegant blend of American and European characteristics, it’s the perfect typographic metaphor for FontShop itself.
