Next in our At Home With series, I reached out to type designer Xavier Dupré in his Cambodian home in Phnom Penh. (I rather would have loved to arrive in person, but since Xavier travels quite a lot, he was gracious to let me conduct this interview by mail.)
#7 At Home & At Work With Mike Abbink
Mike Abbink is the designer of several internationally recognized typefaces, including most recently FF Kievit Slab and FF Milo Slab (FontFont 2013, 2014); and Brando (Bold Monday 2014). In 2014, Mike teamed up with designers Paul van der Laan and Pieter van Rosmalen of Bold Monday to create serif and sans additions to the GE corporate typeface family Inspira. Both Brando and the GE Inspira have recently won awards in the 61st Annual TDC Type Competition. Mike is also Senior Creative Director at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and has a broad typography background from personal, in-house, and design agency work including MetaDesign in San Francisco, Apple, Wolff Olins on two coasts, and Saffron Consultants.
I caught up with Mike at his home in Brooklyn. We toured his neighborhood, studio space, and dropped in to the city to see his office at MoMA.
#6 At Home With Lukas Schneider
We recently popped over to Frankfurt am Main to pay a visit to FF Utility designer Lukas Schneider for our latest installment of the ‘At Home With’ series.
From the images of Lukas in his home it is clear to see how his lifestyle transcends into his type design. Contemporary, creative and clear are descriptions that can be applied to both Schneider’s typeface and home, showing that in this case life truly reflects art!
#5 At Home With Jörg Hemker
Jörg Hemker is the designer behind the popular FontFonts FF Sero and FF Zwo.
Currently based in Hamburg, he has a background in corporate and governmental design and has received a variety of awards including the reddot Design Award and three from the Deutscher Designer Club. As well as working as a freelance designer since 2004, Jörg is also a lecturer in type and typography at the Fachhochschule Dortmund.
#4 At Home With Albert-Jan Pool
In the latest edition of our ‘At Home With’ series we visited the home of type designer and lecturer Albert-Jan Pool.
#3 At Home With Achaz Reuss
Achaz Reuss is a former URW type designer. He founded his own design agency Reuss Design in 1995, specializing in corporate design and corporate type, including the NIVEA brand typeface. He is the designer behind FF QType and also contributed to Albert-Jan Pool’s typeface FF DIN.
#2 At Home With Erik Spiekermann
In our latest ‘At Home With’ series, we caught up with our founder Erik Spiekermann as he takes us through the Berlin townhouse he shares with Susanna Dulkinys and talks about printing presses, his most hated typefaces and what led him to become a typomaniac.
#1 At Work With Ralph Olivier du Carrois
Our ‘At Work With’ series takes a peek behind the scenes of our FontFont designers at work. For the first in our series, we visited Ralph du Carrois who worked on the Cyrillic and Greek character sets for one of our most popular FontFonts, FF Meta Serif. Working alongside Botio Nikoltchev, Ralph also contributed to the Extra Bold and Light weights of FF Meta Serif. Ralph’s studio Carrois Type Design is located very close to the Ostkreuz S-Bahn station in Berlin. A live/work arrangement set over three floors, his space is a visual treat with exposed concrete and a treasure trove of type treats.
